Intervertebral Disc Injury

What is Degenerative Disc Disease?

Degenerative discs have been shown via Dr. DePalma’s published research to be a common cause of adult low back pain. It occurs when the discs around your vertebrae incur an injury (herniated discs), leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced flexibility. In some cases, degenerated discs can place tension on other areas of the body causing leg pain or sciatica. While degenerative disc disease typically develops due to natural aging, it can be accelerated based on injuries, genetics, or lifestyle factors like heavy labor or smoking.

Symptoms

  • Chronic back pain
  • Pain that worsens when sitting or bending
  • Discomfort that stretched into the arms or legs
  • Intermittent pain that varies in intensity
